This website provides videos on the artists, their positions and on the exhibition, providing the opportunity to individually delve into the works and the themes they deal with. During the festival days, the Videonale offers streams of the selected video works in addition to the exhibition.

During the festival days, the VIDEONALE will offer the 31 selected video works as a stream in addition to the exhibition. Furthermore, video material on the artists, their positions and the exhibition will be available online, thus opening up the possibility of approaching the works and their contents independently.

Russel Hlongwane, V18-artist, Durban
Ifu Elimnyama (The Dark Cloud), 2019
In the performance lecture based on the eponymous video work which is also on view, Hlongwane slips into the role of a doctoral candidate. In his dreams, he encounters the protagonist uMalanje, who has traveled through space and time. Their conversations create a tension between indigenous forms of acquiring knowledge and old African technologies.

We are bodies of water – How would our perception of ourselves and others change if we no longer conceive of our bodies as autonomous and self-sufficient, but as fluid and mutable? How would this change our relationship to other living beings, to our own being-in-the-world? Drawing on the theory of "fluid bodies," Astrida Neimanis presents a new understanding of embodiment - and challenges the anthropocentric worldview of human beings.

Following the lecture, three artists will use their video works to re-explore traditional concepts of gender roles and body politics. The limits of these concepts are performatively transformed and taken ad absurdum by Quigley. Staff makes politically fertile the state of exhaustion as a result of the psychological and physical violence that queer bodies repeatedly face and from which they find it difficult to escape. Gibson interweaves an abstract crime story with intimate encounters around the themes of pregnancy and parenthood, precarity and resilience.

Digital guided tour through the VIDEONALE.18 exhibition (German language)

In her lecture, Joanna Page visualizes the limits of human agency with regard to the earth and presents alternatives to the narrative of the Anthropocene, in which humans are often conceded too much power in a ‘mute world.’ She argues that art, above all, can bring forth a genuine planetary perspective when it focuses on forces that elude human control, for example, natural disasters.

After the lecture, three artists of the VIDEONALE.18 talk about the anthropocentric worldview and the exceptional status of humans based on their own works. Letelier shows the alienated relationship of humans to nature using the example of the genetic manipulation and industrial exploitation of salmon as livestock and seeks ways to enter into a new relationship with these beings. As a possibility of a new form of coexistence, Vey Duke & Battersby superimpose the dysfunctional relationship of humans to other species with thoughts on the concept of loving one’s neighbor. Brim deals with the industrial exploitation of the planet by documenting sites of raw material extraction and what it leaves behind.

Pawāaraibu – filling the vacuum by Jana Kerima Stolzer + Lex Rütten

In several episodes, Pawāaraibu – filling the vacuum tells the story of an artificial intelligence that travels in the body of a small drone as one of the last living beings on the post-human earth. We constantly experience the environment through its eyes, within its own language it conveys thoughts and impressions. The earth is shown as a conglomerate of nature, remnants of human intervention and up to now modern technology that takes care of maintenance. Prequel and Episode 01 - pumps n' lungs tell of the moment of archiving on earth. The drone explores its surroundings with an innocent and impartial gaze, only becoming aware of its physicality when it picks up its shadow image or reflection in the water. As it explores, it encounters retarded seemingly human beings who are responsible for maintaining the pumps and other machines and other procedures. We find ourselves in the essence of the drone, whereas the seemingly human body has become distant in its abstraction.

Pawāaraibu – filling the vacuum by Jana Kerima Stolzer + Lex Rütten

Episode 02 - wandering the archive, which is hosted on the social VR platform Mozilla Hubs, travels into an environment without time-space attribution. We find ourselves in the head of the drone, travelling through the archive of its processed data, which consists of fragments of the previous world. These remaining excerpts stand as a proxy for that forgotten history that has been lost in brutal landscape inscriptions caused by exploitation of earthly resources. Within 4 scenes reminiscent of a musical, we wander through 3D models and listen to the song of the drone, texts that also repeatedly appear in the virtual world itself and describe its surroundings and happenings.
